School brings plenty of challenges—balancing assignments, managing time, building friendships, and finding confidence along the way. For many middle and high schoolers, it can take creativity and resilience to keep it all in balance. The good news? Today’s students aren’t just managing—they’re innovating.
This year’s K12 Innovation Challenge invites students in grades 6–12 to imagine bold new ways to make learning more creative, inclusive, and inspiring. It’s an opportunity for students nationwide to showcase their problem-solving skills and help shape the future of education.
Participants can choose from three exciting categories, each designed to spark curiosity and innovation:
- Tomorrow’s Classroom– Reimagine how we learn
- Student Life Hacks – Create smart solutions for everyday school challenges
- Gamify It! – Turn learning into a game
To enter, students submit a 30-second to 2-minute video pitch sharing their idea for how education could evolve to better serve future learners. Whether they’re designing a new classroom concept, building a study tool, or inventing an educational game, every idea has the power to inspire change.
Students can enter individually or form a team of up to three friends or classmates from their grade band (6–8 or 9–12). Working together allows them to combine strengths, share perspectives, and develop even more creative, practical solutions.
Encourage your student to explore all three Innovation Challenge categories and find the one that best fits their interests.
What the “Student Life Hacks” Category Is All About
Every school day brings opportunities to learn, connect, and grow—and sometimes to find better ways to do all three. The Student Life Hacks category invites middle and high schoolers to design tools, systems, or products that make school more manageable, enjoyable, and supportive.
This category celebrates student-led innovation rooted in empathy, creativity, and lived experience. From boosting time management skills to supporting mental wellness and communication, it’s all about helping students thrive both academically and personally.
Examples of Student-Driven Solutions
The possibilities are endless! Some examples of what students might create include:
- A planner or digital toolkit to improve study habits and organization
- A peer support or mental wellness app that promotes balance and connection
- A physical product, like a smart backpack or stress relief kit, that simplifies daily routines
- A campaign or system that boosts collaboration and communication among students
Whether it’s a clever invention or a thoughtful support system, this category encourages students to turn everyday frustrations into meaningful solutions that make school life better for everyone.
Why This Category Matters
Every student has faced moments of feeling busy, stretched, or uncertain. The Student Life Hacks category empowers them to transform those experiences into opportunities for innovation. It’s a hands-on way to build skills in design thinking, empathy, and collaboration—while creating solutions that can help their peers succeed.
By tackling real issues like homework overload, time management challenges, and mental wellness needs, students learn that their ideas can make a real difference in how schools support learning and growth.
The Benefits of Participating
Students who take part in the K12 Innovation Challenge gain more than just recognition—they gain confidence, experience, and national exposure for their ideas. The top 12 finalist teams will:
