Start Strong With Online Learning

No two children are the same — so why should we expect them to learn the same way, on the same educational journey?

K12-powered online schools break the one-size-fits-all model by empowering students with the flexibility and resources they need to unlock their unique potential.

Here’s how you can help your child get motivated and stay engaged on their curated path to online learning success.

Preparing for the First Day of School With K12

Getting started with K12 is simple. Once you’ve enrolled your child, follow these three steps to set the stage for a successful learning journey.

  • Check out the Parent Portal

The K12 experience includes a Parent Portal, where parents and guardians can access even more resources to support their student’s education.

During your child’s K12 journey, the Parent Portal gives you the tools to organize your student’s day, help your child navigate their classes, and keep your child focused on learning.

  • Join the Learning Coach Community.

Successful learning goes beyond the classroom. You — or another trusted adult — can be part of your student’s unique educational path by being a Learning Coach.

Learning Coaches are bridges between students and schools. They act as advocates for their students to make sure their needs are being met while also working with teachers to make sure the students stay on track.

The Learning Coach Community lets you connect with other Learning Coaches. Swap stories, ask questions, and hear from those who know what it’s like to be a K12 Learning Coach. With the Learning Coach Community, you always have someone in your corner.

How to Start Online Classes: Organizing Your Student’s Learning

Organization is one of the most significant keys to your student’s online learning success. Without the traditional infrastructure of a brick-and-mortar school day, creating schedules and plans is even more important to help your student stay focused.

K12 has the tools and tips you need to instill in your student the time management skills that will help them succeed in school and beyond.

  • Download and complete your specially designed planners.

Access our daily and monthly planners to help you manage your child’s schedule. Fill them in online, or make it a fun offline activity for you and your student.

At the beginning of each month, work with your child to build a weekly schedule that includes live classes, tutoring sessions, clubs, sports practices, and more. Record due dates, explain how to plan ahead, and encourage your child to look over their daily planner at the start of each school day.

Set specific daily goals, such as what you expect your student to learn that day.

Dedicate blocks of time to studying, meals, breaks, chores, and physical and social activities. Make sure your student has plenty of downtime: kids still need to be kids!

Include a cut-off time for schoolwork each night.  Students should have plenty of “buffer” time between learning and bed so they can get a good night’s sleep.

After they wrap up their school day, ask your child to share what they learned, how they feel about their lessons, and their plans for tomorrow.

  • Dedicate space for success.

Give your student a designated learning space. This will help them focus as well as provide a physical cue that this is a place for learning. Make sure they have the offline tools they need, such as pens, pencils, paper, textbooks, and other learning materials.

The space should be quiet and separate from their everyday lives. Let them customize their space so they feel a sense of belonging. Doing so helps your student stay engaged by taking ownership of their learning.
