Virginia families can enroll their child in a K12-powered online public school or homeschool program — accredited, taught by certified teachers, and free for eligible students. Options are available for grades K–12. Use the school finder to see which K12-powered schools are accepting enrollment in Virginia.

Virginia homeschool families can choose from several K12 resources depending on how much support they want. Individual online courses are available for purchase across math, science, history, language arts, world languages, and electives—useful for filling gaps or letting your child explore an interest. K12 Learning Hub offers thousands of free lessons for grades K–12 to enrich any curriculum. And for families who want the structure of a school without giving up learning at home, K12-powered online public schools offer an education that combines the convenience of homeschool with the structure of traditional public school.
K12-powered schools offer a tuition-free* public school option where Virginia-licensed teachers apply a personalized approach to an online curriculum. Students attend regularly scheduled online Class Connect sessions during the week, then complete coursework and activities on their own or with classmates, at their own pace. As with homeschooling in Virginia, parents play an active role in their child’s education. A Learning Coach—usually the student’s parent—helps keep students on track with assignments and communicates regularly with teachers.
The main difference is who provides the teaching and curriculum. In Virginia homeschooling, parents choose the curriculum and lead instruction themselves. K12-powered online schools, by contrast, provide Virginia-licensed teachers, an established curriculum developed by education professionals, and a school administration with principals. Parents have teacher conferences, students receive report cards, and schools follow state attendance and assessment requirements. The two options do share important similarities: students learn from the comfort of home, are empowered to take charge of their learning, and parents stay actively involved along the way. Online school is still social, too—students participate in extracurricular activities like online clubs to connect with their peers.
Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA) is a tuition-free, full-time online public school program serving Virginia students in grades K–12 statewide. A program of multiple public school divisions across Virginia, VAVA has provided online education for more than 15 years. Students learn from Virginia-certified teachers through live, interactive instruction, with career prep starting in middle school and advanced coursework including honors, AP®, and dual credit options. For families seeking alternatives, K12 also offers tuition-based online private school options and individual courses for purchase to supplement homeschooling.
