Online learning has come a long way, but outdated myths still pop up—especially if you’re just starting to explore virtual school options. At K12, we know how important it is for families to have the facts. That’s why we’re letting the experts—our students—set the record straight.
Through the Reel Me video competition, K12-powered students are busting the most common myths about online school and sharing what it’s really like to learn online. Spoiler alert: It’s probably more social, structured, and inspiring than you think!
Myth #1: “Online Learning Means Learning Alone”
Many people picture online students sitting in silence all day—but that’s far from the truth. Our students connect daily with their teachers and classmates through live classes, group projects, and virtual study groups. They collaborate, ask questions, and make friends—all from the safety and comfort of home.
Myth #2: “Online Students Miss Out on Socialization”
Online students don’t just learn together—they play, explore, and grow together, too. K12-powered students can join virtual clubs, attend school field trips, and take part in local meetups. And because their schedule is more flexible, many also have time for sports, music, volunteering, or other community activities that help them build friendships beyond the screen.
Myth #3: “Online School Lacks Structure”
Online school offers flexibility, but that doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all. Students follow a proven curriculum, attend live classes, and get regular guidance from certified teachers. Families can adjust their daily routine to fit their student’s learning style and other commitments—but learning goals, expectations, and accountability are always clear.
Myth #4: “Parents Have to Be the Teachers”
Parents play a key role as Learning Coaches, but they’re not expected to teach every subject. Our state-licensed teachers handle instruction and grade assignments and provide one-to-one support. Parents offer guidance and encouragement, and we equip them with the tools and training they need to feel confident in that role.
Myth #5: “Online School Isn’t as Rigorous as Traditional School”
Think online school is easier? Think again. K12-powered schools offer a full academic experience that meets state standards. Our students graduate ready for college, career, and life—and many go on to attend top universities around the country.
