Herndon, VA, – (K12 Inc.) – The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the State Board of Education recognized Washington Virtual Academies High School Program (WAVA) with the Washington Achievement Award, which honors the state’s top-performing schools.
Based on the school’s performance over several years of the Washington Achievement Index, the award reflects how schools in Washington are performing over time. WAVA was given a Special Recognition for Improvement Award. The Washington Achievement Award recognizes the incredible effort educators, administrators and families are putting into making our schools the best they can be and highlights some of the best practices that are making that success possible.
“This award is another demonstration of the dedication of WAVA staff to help students find their own path to academic success in high school and beyond,” said WAVA Principal DeAnna Kilga. “Our teachers are deeply engaged in guiding students with a plan and curriculum that fits that student individually.”
WAVA’s High School program is a full-time, online public school that offers Washington students the choice to access the exceptional K12 curriculum and tools that enable them to maximize success in life with a 21st-century education. Students go to school full-time to complete a comprehensive combination of online and offline coursework with state-certified teachers, and can choose from a robust course catalog that includes honors and advanced placement courses.
Students from across Washington State can enroll at WAVA and come from a wide variety of backgrounds and learning abilities including accelerated learners, homebound students, students of military families, athletes and performers, and struggling students. The award to reflects the school’s ability to provide individualized curriculum to cater to a student’s specific academic needs regardless of where they are when they enter the program.
The Washington Achievement Award is given to elementary, middle, high and comprehensive schools in seven different categories: overall excellence, language arts, math, science, extended graduation rate, improvement and closing achievement gaps. The award helps to provide a fair and consistent measurement of Washington’s public schools and a clear picture of how our schools are performing. The award is also designed to tell us more about progress in our schools than the federal No Child Left Behind Act’s requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress.
According to OSPI, award-winning schools share at least one common attribute: the power to profoundly affect student learning.
