Course Outline

Students learn the computer requirements and other basic information for the course. They set up files and folders, install the course software, and learn to use zip utilities. They also learn to identify sources of trustworthy information, the definition of plagiarism, and how to properly cite information.

Section 1: Selling and Pricing

Students learn topics such as the differences between marketing and sales, principles of selling, the importance of customer retention, common sales methods, internal and external factors that affect pricing, common pricing strategies, and ethical issues associated with selling and pricing.

Section 2: Customers, Inventory, and Safety

Students learn topics such as factors that contribute to customer expectations; the importance of customer service; merchandising; processes for shipping, receiving, and tracking inventory; health and safety regulations; material safety data sheets; and ergonomics.

Section 3: Workplace Skills

Section 4: Career Development

Students learn topics such as finding, hiring, and orienting employees. Section 5: Using the Internet

Students learn how technology is used in the workplace, how business is conducted over the Internet, how to use Web browsers and email, how to identify trustworthy sources of information, ways to communicate safely online, and how to use copyrighted works fairly.

Section 6: Word Processing

Students learn about and practice cover letters. They proofread for spelling, punctuation, spacing, capitalization, grammar, and clarity

Students learn how oral presentations are used in business and create a presentation with OpenOffice.org Impress.
