Course Overview

Computer-aided design systems are used by designers and manufacturers in virtually every industry to create engineering design solutions. In this course, students are introduced to engineering, learning the basics of CAD software: creating points, lines, other geometric forms, isometric drawings, and 3D models. They learn how to translate initial concepts into functional designs and 3D walkthroughs and explore career options in this hands-on introductory-level course.

Course Outline


Students learn the computer requirements and other basic information for the course. They set up files and folders, install the course software, and learn to use zip utilities. They also learn to identify sources of trustworthy information, the definition of plagiarism, and how to properly cite information.

Health and Safety in the Workplace

Students review basics of ergonomics and repetitive strain injury and learn about the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Computer Basics

Students learn about hardware, software, operating systems, input and output devices, and other basics of computer use.

Project 1: Create Shapes

Students are introduced to engineering and computer-aided design (CAD), including common types of careers that use these skills. They learn about the tools of drafting and begin a drawing in CadStd.

Project 2: Create Orthographic Drawings

Students learn about 2-D, 3-D, and orthographic projection. They work with visible and construction lines, layers, dimensions, scale, and symmetry.

Project 3: Draw Sectional Views

Students work with sectional views, planes, angles, orthographic views, cutting plane lines, and offset sections.

Project 4: Create an Isometric Drawing

Students practice techniques of pictorial drawing, tonal shading, and depth. They work with isometric drawings, using distance and angle measurements to draw lines in CAD.

Project 5: Create an Oblique Drawing

Students explore oblique drawings, learn how to measure lines accurately and using foreshortened lines of depth.

Project 6: Create a Perspective Drawing

Students practice techniques of perspective drawings, learn about vanishing points; horizon lines; and one-, two-, and three-point perspective.

Project 7: Draw an Auxiliary View

Students learn about auxiliary views, and how to visualize auxiliary views of 3-D objects. Topics include perpendicular lines, reference planes.

Project 8: Dimension Drawings

Students practice dimension drawings, learn about aligned and unidirectional dimensions, relative and baseline dimensions, and how CAD standards apply to dimensioning. They interpret drawings with advanced features, such as center line and dual dimensioning, tolerance, and theoretical points of intersection.

Project 9: Create Working Drawings

Students learn about working drawings such as detail and assembly drawings. They learn about title blocks, border lines, and orthographic views, then export .cad files to .dxf files in proper order for a set of working drawings.

Project 10: Create a 3-D Design

Students create 3-D designs in SketchUp, learning to move and rotate a 3-D object, apply patterns and color, and carve objects. They view designs in various 2-D orthographic views and through a walkthrough.

Project 11: Exploring Design

Students learn about the main stages of the design process, common roles for people working on a team project, and common scheduling challenges. They explore ecology, green design, and sustainability, and consider how to design for people's needs, values, and social patterns.
