Course Overview

This course introduces students to 3D modeling tools and concepts. Using Blender, the popular open-source 3D modeling package, students learn the basics of creating shapes, adding textures and lighting, and rendering. By the end of the course, students produce a series of increasingly sophisticated projects for their 3D portfolio. This course is suitable for students with no prior experience in 3D game design or digital media authoring tools.

Course Outline

Students learn how to start the course, set up their computer to view the course, set up a Web browser, download the resources they will need, and complete and turn in assignments.

Project 1: Make a Hat

Students learn about the Blender interface and how to move around in 3D space, and then they make their first 3D object.

Project 2: Build a House

Students make and paint a house, add materials, change lighting type, and constrain a camera to follow a path. Then they render the animation.

Project 3: Create a Creature

Students make a simple creature model out of boxes, and then they make it round and smooth. They make eyes, mouth, teeth, eyebrows, nose, arms, legs, and a tail, before making the creature colorful and furry.

Project 4: Animate a Creature

Students add bones to the creature and use the bones to move the creature into different poses. Then they take the different poses and turn them into an animation of the creature walking.

Project 5: Create Terrain

Students create a landscape of hills and valleys, to which they add dirt and grass. They create a cloudy sky and a moon that glows, and then they add stars.

Project 6: Build a Car

Students make a rubber tire with a chrome hubcap. They build a 2D model of a car and stretch it into 3D, create a windshield, and paint the car. Then they create asphalt for the car to drive on and make a movie of the car driving.

Project 7: Make a Scene

Students bring the house and creature together into one Blender project. They make the creature the correct size for the house, animate the creature walking toward the house, and modify the creature's walking animation. They animate the house's door to open, and then they render and play the animation.
