Dear Dr. Wilbur

Jonathon Purcell – a student who graduated from the California Virtual Academy (CAVA) , which partners with K¹² for its curriculum and online learning system – was accepted for admission to the prestigious University of California at Berkeley.

It was the fulfillment of a dream.  Nothing expresses this more eloquently than Jonathon’s letter to the Director of Admissions, Dr. Susan A. Wilbur.

Dear Dr. Susan Wilbur:

You may not remember me, but several months ago I, along with my mother and school administrators, had a meeting with you regarding the acceptance of my school's courses as meeting the University of California’s a-g requirements. I vividly recall my joy and gratitude when you said that you would put California Virtual Academy’s (CAVA) application through the review committee with your strongest recommendations. I also remember the promise you made personally to send a letter to all University of California campuses informing them of CAVA’s pending acceptance and to treat this year’s senior class no differently than the senior class from a fully approved high school.

I would like to express my gratitude for all that you have done once again, but I am finding that the English language is deficient of ways to express appreciation of this magnitude. This month I received three acceptance letters from University of California campuses. I was thrilled when I saw the first two from UC Davis and UC San Diego, but words cannot describe my joy when I received the final one just yesterday. I believe I told you that it was my dream to attend UC Berkeley. Yesterday saw the beginning of the fulfillment of that dream. I want to humbly thank you with every fiber of my being and from the bottom of my heart because you helped make that dream come true.

Life presents us with numerous challenges, but, in the end, leaves us stronger because of them. Thank you for showing me that success is achieved, not through never falling down, but through always getting back up. Thank you for providing me with a hand of assistance to rise once more.

Sincerely,
Johnathon Purcell
