Spell 'n' Stack is an arcade-style game that focuses on improving spelling fluency by engaging students to spell words quickly and accurately through independent review and practice. Students are enticed by the promise of rescuing adorable beavers throughout various levels of challenge. Students earn points toward high scores and receive other awards for their performance. Behind the scenes, the game promotes spelling fluency though the integration of spelling words from the K12 language arts curriculum.

Why use Spell 'n' Stack?

This game is embedded in K12 courses to provide students with additional opportunities to practice and improve upon their spelling skills. It aims to make spelling more fun through online interactivity in a visually stimulating environment. The presence of animated beavers helps motivate learners to persist with the spelling activity, in order to "save" these creatures by demonstrating spelling prowess.

The research-based value of Spell ‘n' Stack is rooted in cognitive science and instructional design research (Clark & Mayer, 2008):

  • Students learn better when visuals are accompanied with audio components, rather than just text alone.
  • Students learn better when the instruction is delivered in a personal, conversational tone.
