The K¹² curriculum is a comprehensive program incorporating innovative web-based lessons, assessments, planning tools, and traditional books and education materials covering the core subjects of English/ Language Arts, Math, Science, History, Art, and Music for grades K-8, plus a robust offering of high school courses in grades 9-12.
K¹² offers individualized learning solutions for students using an outstanding, highly effective curriculum that enables mastery of core concepts and skills for students of all abilities by combining a cognitive science-based curriculum with individualized learning approaches, delivered by teachers specifically trained to educate in an online environment.
Developed by renowned and respected education experts—including scholars, writers, teachers, and designers—the K¹² curriculum is based on time-tested and research-based methods of instruction. Central to the K¹² learning program is the Online School (OLS), which hosts more than 11,000 interactive, engaging and comprehensive lessons presented in a mix of printable and multimedia forms. The K¹² Online School also includes lesson assessments, planning and progress tools, and an attendance tracking system to determine the number of instructional hours completed by the student.
The K12 program enables a diverse group of children to achieve mastery through a combination of individualized learning approaches, passionate teacher engagement, adherence to the best educational research that has been conducted over the past several decades about how young minds really work, and rich, engaging content.

The K¹² learning program is used by more than 25,000 students and 700 teachers across the country in public virtual (online) schools. There are currently 17 statewide public virtual schools using the K¹² learning program, and three major cities with public virtual schools using K¹² including:

Founded in 1999, Virginia-based K¹² has developed extensive partnerships with public schools and school districts across the country, responding to the increasing demand from parents and students. K¹² has emerged as a leading provider of curriculum and school services to public virtual schools.
Many of the nation’s top-performing public virtual schools are using the K¹² curriculum and school services:
- Both Florida Virtual Academy and Arkansas Virtual Academy are the top-performing K-8 virtual schools in their states (test scores exceed states’ average).
- Ohio Virtual Academy has consistently been the top-performing virtual school for the past four years.
- Colorado Virtual Academy is the top performing virtual school in the state.
- Wisconsin Virtual Academy students had the highest test scores of any statewide public virtual school.
- The Hunter Elementary School (an inner city school in Philadelphia with 95% students qualifying for free and reduced lunch) partnered with K12 to use the web-based curriculum and learning program. In 2005, third grade students had a 46 percent increase in performance; fifth grade students showed a 22 percent gain. As a result, the third and fifth grade students met or exceeded the absolute AYP goals for math instruction—a first for the school.
K12 Learning Options
Statewide Public Virtual Schools
K¹² partners with school districts, virtual charter schools, and education agencies to offer full-time public virtual schools to students who reside anywhere in the state. Using the complete K¹² curriculum and professional school services, virtual schools can provide families a personalized education option designed to meet every student’s individual needs, regardless of geographic, economic, or academic circumstance.
Virtual School Programs for School Districts
K¹² partners with school districts across the country to offer a virtual school program for students who reside inside their district boundaries. These district-operated virtual school programs use the complete K¹² curriculum and education tools to provide a comprehensive education for students, outside the school building. District virtual school programs are an ideal public school alternative for students who, for whatever reason, are better served outside the traditional classroom. There are more than two dozen virtual school programs using the K¹² learning program across the country.
K¹² Solutions for Classrooms
K¹² provides school districts with an innovative science curriculum and a suite of education tools for classroom instruction. The K¹² classroom program includes interactive, web-based science lessons, teacher guides, student books, hands-on materials, and assessments. Ideal for use with an interactive whiteboard, lessons blend audio and visual stimulation to boost students’ retention and motivation. Online home accounts can also facilitate increased parent involvement and communication. The K¹² science program is used by approximately 50,000 students in more than 2,000 classrooms nationwide.
K¹² Consumer Direct
K12 also sells curriculum products directly to families who use these products either on a full time private home-schooling basis or on a supplemental basis to augment their child’s education. .
There are approximately 5,500 children who are using the K12 learning program through the Consumer Direct channel.
