Teacher Qualification Requirements

Job Responsibilities

The Ohio Virtual Academy is seeking top-notch teachers to be part of our pioneering effort in public education. If you share our pioneering mission and approach, and have a strong education background and a firm understanding of how best practices from a regular classroom can be applied to our innovative model, we'd like to hear from you.


Though we are primarily focused on academics, you must be comfortable using technology and supporting new users of technology while you work from your home. As part of your regular teaching responsibilities, you will:


• Become familiar with the K¹² curriculum
• Support students and parents with student placement, curriculum, and instructional issues
• Support students and parents with school setup and logistics questions
• Support parents and students with basic computer setup, navigation, and troubleshooting
• Respond within 24 hours to student and parent inquiries via phone and/or e-mail during the regular work week
• Proactively track student academic progress and attendance
• Process student change in placement, as needed
• Conduct regular conferences with parents/other designated primary adults and/or students to assess each student's progress, learning style, and any other academic, social, or developmental issues
• Collect and review portfolio selections
• Evaluate work and provide feedback to parents in a timely manner
• Write reports for semester progress reports
• Generate informal and formal reports based on conferences; keep records in an electronic workbook format
• Alert administrators of any concerns about student progress or attendance
• Track attendance hours and verify that they are being logged and that they correlate with the number of lessons completed
• Be familiar with truancy policy and proactively notify office if necessary
• Complete regular attendance spreadsheets to be used for state attendance reporting
• Research and create lessons that complement/supplement the school's program
• Organize orientation, training, social, and educational activities for students and families
• Take part in managing the OHVA Community Board
• Provide continued communication for students and families
• Participate in a scheduled teacher conference call
• Participate on IEP teams for students with special needs
• Work with the administration to prepare students for state proficiency/achievement/diagnostic tests (including the logistics of selecting testing sites)
• Serve as proctors for site-based proctored exams
• Use and test new technologies before families and students implement them
• Participate in the school's self-evaluation program
• Help to track the delivery and return of materials and computer equipment
• Support school administrators with school information sessions
• Lead parent orientations during late summer and early fall (and for small groups)
• Assist with various projects throughout the year with colleagues and administration, as needed
• Travel at least twice per month within and between assigned geographic areas to support students; attend regularly scheduled meetings; and participate in school activities, open houses, and orientations
• Participate in scheduled Level I/Level II Intervention calls when the student is involved in the teacher's class

Requirements

OHVA will only consider teacher applicants who possess:

• Bachelor's degree
• 3+ years of teaching experience, or the equivalent
• Shared view of the school's mission
• Strong content and subject-matter knowledge
• Appropriate state certification
• An ability to support and guide adults, as well as students
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Organization and time-management skills
• Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook, and experience using them in a professional capacity
• Flexible schedule


The ideal candidate will also have:
• Experience working with the proposed age groups
• Knowledge of alternative public school environments, including charter schools
• An understanding of e-schooling environments
• Special education training and experience (as enrollment dictates)
• Experience using Internet search engines
• Experience using a student information system and/or other type of database
• An ability to learn new technology tools quickly (e.g., database and web-based tools)
• An ability to support adults with basic computer setup and navigation
