Virtual Academy Picking Up Steam

Going to school in your pj's is something most students only dream about, and that’s part of the attraction for students in Idaho's Virtual Academy.

Kiah Carpenter says even though she does her school work at home, she's definitely not missing out.

"I dance, I'm in jump company and I have a lot of friends and they really support this," Carpenter said. "They say this is good for you."

Even though she spends her school days in her pj's, she's right on track with her friends that go to regular public schools.

Her mom says because of the Idaho Virtual Academy, Kiah is right up there academically, but missing out on some of the tougher parts of junior high.

As a parent, she's so pleased with the program that she plans to start Kiah's younger sister in it next year.

Idaho's Virtual Academy's Superintendent Cody Claver says it's all apart of a growing trend.

"Currently we have about 1800 students enrolled in grades K–9," he said.

Claver also says just like any other public school, the academy is free.

"It is free; we are a public virtual school just like any other school in our state," Claver added.

If Kiah is any indicator, the academy's success should continue to skyrocket.
