How it Works (High School)

At Michigan Virtual Charter Academy, students can be who they are, and then some.

Imagine a public high school program that lets students set their sights on a range of post–school goals, and provides students the freedom to explore their interests. MVCA offers two unique high school options for students—a fully virtual program, as well as a hybrid program that is focused on re–engaging students who have dropped out of the traditional school setting. For those students who have dropped out of the traditional school system, and are not close to our Grand Rapids learning center, they may also enroll in a synchronous version of our virtual program. From career preparation to college prep, our programs are designed to help students maximize their ability to succeed after high school on whatever path they choose.

While the high school program is designed to give students the freedom they need, students aren't in it alone. We provide a dynamic team of teachers to lead instruction and create a connected school community. MVCA accesses the extensive K¹² high school curriculum portfolio of core and elective courses, including Math, English/Language Arts, Science, History/Social Sciences, and more.

Instructional Models

The MVCA virtual program provides students with a high school experience like no other through the K¹² high school program. With more than 130 online courses from which to choose, including three to four versions of core subjects, students can enjoy an individualized high school program tailored to their goals and abilities.

MVCA high school students receive many benefits through the K¹² high school program, including:

  • Outstanding, individualized curriculum from K¹², the leading online K–12 curriculum provider and a CITA-accredited company
  • Multiple curriculum options to meet the needs of a variety of learners
  • Diverse high school catalog with more than 130 courses, including up to four levels of courses in Math, English, Science, and History
  • Individualized Learning Plan for each student that charts a course for success during and after high school
  • The "xTeam"—teachers, advisors, counselors, coordinators, and other educational personnel—offering personalized, extensive support to students and families
  • Extracurricular clubs and activities
  • In-person teacher-led and school-sponsored events where students can network with their peers

In the hybrid program, instruction is delivered through a unique blend of traditional brick-and-mortar schooling and online learning. Students attend class at a learning center in Grand Rapids, for a portion of the time, with the remaining instruction occurring off-site through asynchronous virtual instruction. Even when students are in the classroom setting, their lessons are still individualized for their specific needs, rather than the class as a whole.

An Alternative Education Plan (AEP) is developed for each student that maps out an individualized plan for course requirements, academic progress, and long and short term goals. Learning happens via the K¹² Learning Management System (LMS) that assists students in organizing their time, completing their lessons, submitting assignments and seeking assistance when needed.

Students' progress will be monitored weekly by their instructors regarding their time on task and course completion progress. Students who are not making satisfactory progress in their courses will work with their instructor to develop a time management plan and contract short term goals for weekly progress.

Students have access to certified teachers who provide support and instructional management on-site and will work one-on-one and with small groups of students to provide remediation and support as needed.

In addition to our academic program, we provide students with the following support services:

  • Career counseling
  • Academic counseling
  • Mentoring
  • Social Service Referrals
  • Tutoring
  • Job referrals and internships

Who is this intended for?

The MVCA high school program serves students in grades 9–12 who reside within the state of Michigan, are under the age of 21, and who have dropped out of the traditional brick–and–mortar public school system (hybrid program only). Students enrolling in the hybrid program must also be able to attend the learning center in Grand Rapids for site-based instruction.

What are the costs?

Because we are part of the public school system, the MVCA high school program is tuition free. The entire program, including curriculum and teacher and instructional support are provided free of charge.
