Teacher Job Description

Hawaii Technology Academy, an innovative Hawaii public charter school, is seeking highly qualified and motivated teachers to work with students in a variety of learning settings—via live computer instruction and interaction, at our learning center, and throughout the community at outings and cultural or educational events. Our teachers are part of a pioneering effort in public education and should have a spirit of creative learning and a passion linked to their students’ success and growth.

We expect our teachers to have a strong education background with a proven commitment to student success. As a technology-based school, we require our teachers to be experienced in and comfortable with technology and computers.

Expectations

Instruction and Student Achievement

  • Learn the curriculum. Our educational program is powered by the K12 curriculum. Our curriculum is based on proven research and cognitive science. Our teachers are expected to know the curriculum at all grade levels so they can ensure their students are learning what they need to know to build strong foundations and master new concepts.
  • Meet regularly with students for instruction and academic activities at the learning center.
  • Initiate cultural and academic outings for students to demonstrate a solid knowledge of state standards and testing requirements.
  • Research and create lessons that complement/supplement the K12 curriculum to meet the needs of individual students.
  • Assess student academic progress, performance, and attendance in the Online School.
  • Provide students and parents with regular feedback regarding student performance, progress, and academic needs, and respond to intervention.
  • Support students with special needs, including participating on IEP teams.
  • Prepare students for standardized tests and proctor site-based exams.


Virtual Instructional Environment

  • Create and manage home office.
  • Use web-based instructional materials effectively.
  • Establish solid relationships with students’ families.
  • Organize orientation, training, and social and educational activities for students and families.


Professional Responsibilities

  • Actively learn and grow as a teacher.
  • Be dedicated to the growth and success of each student.
  • Build community by contributing to school message boards, newsletters, outings, and events.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Take part in other support activities and assignments that will ensure the success of our students.

Requirements

  • Meet Hawaii’s Highly Qualified Teacher requirements
  • Appropriate teaching credential from the state of Hawaii
  • 3+ years of teaching experience
  • Ability to support and guide adults, as well as students
  • Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, and the Internet
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to travel
  • Experience in a charter school or school of choice environment desired
  • Ability to learn new technology tools quickly (e.g., database and web-based tools)
