FAQs – Enrollment & Attendance

Who is eligible to attend a Florida Virtual Program?
Students who reside within a school district that has an established virtual instruction program with K¹² and who meet the following eligibility requirements are eligible to enroll.
  • Students who reside within a district that has an established K-8 Virtual Program with K¹², and
  • Were counted in the October 2008 and February 2009 surveys, or
  • Are dependent children of a member of the U.S. Armed Forces who was transferred within the last 12 months pursuant to a permanent change of station
Due to the prior public eligibility requirement, kindergarten enrollment is limited to students who either meet the military requirement listed above or currently receive full funding from their district as part of a special education program.

What school districts will be offering a Florida Virtual Program for the 2009-2010 school year?
The list of school districts offering a Florida Virtual Program for the 2009-2010 school year is continually growing. We encourage you to check our School District Enrollment Status page for the most current information. You can also register to receive notification once a program is available and enrollment is open in your district.

How many of my children can attend?
Because Florida Virtual Programs provide all the lesson plans and materials needed for K-8, many parents find it easy to enroll multiple children in the program. We currently have families with as many as five children in the program being guided by the same learning coach in conjunction with the support of K¹² teachers.

How much does it cost to attend?
Because our programs are public virtual schools, there is no tuition. We provide students all instructional materials for the program. Students and families will be responsible for providing some consumable materials.

What is the attendance policy?
We work with families toward a positive attendance record to meet their required number of hours. Students in grades K-3 must attend 720 hours a year, or 180 days at four hours, and students in grades 4-8 must attend for 900 hours a year, or 180 days at five hours.

Can I take a vacation during the school year?
The school calendar includes school "holidays" or vacation time. Whenever possible, family vacations should align with school vacation days. Again, we will work with families toward a positive attendance record to meet their required number of hours.

No educational leave will be granted during any of the testing windows for state-mandated testing.
