Do I have to get an extra phone line? If so, how do I get one?

K¹² works like any other Internet application—you don’t need an extra phone line dedicated to our program. If you are interested in an extra line, you can contact your local phone company to install one for a fee.

What plug-ins do I need and where can I get them?

You will need Adobe Acrobat (7 or higher) and Adobe Flash 9.

What modem speed do I need?

You need a 56 kbps modem or better. However, use of a broadband connection instead of dialup is highly recommended.

What computer equipment is required to use K¹²?

You need either a Windows-based or Apple Macintosh computer with an Internet connection and free software programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Most courses have audio, so require speakers. World Language courses require both speakers and microphones.

What browser and versions can I use?

We recommend using the following browsers when accessing K¹² online applications:

Online School (OLS):

  • Internet Explorer (IE) 7.0, 8.0, or 9.0
  • Mozilla Firefox 3.6, 4.0, or higher
  • Google Chrome 17.0 or higher

Although we support all of the above browser types for the OLS, Firefox and Chrome browsers continuously update versions and you may encounter some difficulties after initially downloading the newest browser version.  We are working to resolve all issues on these major browser types, including the newest versions. Please try another supported browser if problems persist.

Study Island:

  • Internet Explorer (IE) 8.0 or 9.0
  • Firefox 3.6, 4.0, or higher
  • Google Chrome is not supported by Study Island.

What computer skills are required?

Some basic skills are required. Use of the computer is an important part of the program, but in the early grades it is mostly the parent (or other responsible adult) who interacts with the computer. The program is user-friendly.
