High School FAQs

When can I start my courses? How do I access my courses?

New customers can select any date, up to six months out, for their subscription access plan activation date (the date the Online School (OLS) course access begins):

If you have already established a K¹² account (through placement tests or our online ordering system), you will use the username and password that you created during the K¹² Independence account setup process to access the Online School (OLS) on your plan activation date.

If you haven't already established a K¹² account (through placement tests or our online ordering system), K¹² will email you your OLS registration and log on information within 3 days of your plan activation date. At that time you can begin to set up your schedule and explore the lessons.

Your student can register to take the AP® Exam in your local school district or at a local testing center.

Can a student with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) enroll in K¹² High School courses?

Yes. However, K¹² does not provide the support network necessary for IEP students. Students with IEPs must have a local support network in place if they choose to enroll in K¹² High School courses. Students in this situation should notify their Apex Learning teacher of the IEP during the course orientation and facilitate communication between the Apex Learning teacher and their local IEP support person.

Will I receive records of course completion or a transcript?

Students and mentors have 24/7 access to student progress reports which can be easily downloaded as Excel files. Semester reports are also available for download. In addition, mentors have a mentor Grade Book, a read-only version of the teacher's Grade Book – the final grade is not visible until course completion and final grades are posted. Transcripts are not available online, but can be requested by calling K¹² Customer Care at 1-866-626-6413.

What are the graduation requirements? Are diplomas awarded?

K¹² is a curriculum provider of courses for students as opposed to a high school and as such we do not have graduation requirements for students and do not offer diplomas. Students and families should refer to their state high school course requirements and/or the application requirements for selected colleges and universities to determine a complete 4 year high school course sequence.

Are the K¹² High School courses accredited?

K¹²'s partner, Apex Learning, is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. For more information on the benefits of accreditation please refer to http://www.boisestate.edu/naas/.

How many hours a week are required to complete lessons?

Although this varies based on individual student work habits and studying patterns, students spend on average 6-9 hours per week for a regular course and 8-12 hours for an Advanced Placement (AP)® course.

Do K¹² High School courses support a flexible student schedule?

There are start and end dates for each semester and specific due dates for all assignments. Students are also required to take part in graded discussions surrounding each unit. Students have flexible study schedules. However, class assignments must be completed by the due date, since this best assures strong student outcomes. If a student must finish earlier than the scheduled course end date, they can speak with their assigned teacher prior to the start of the course to discuss an accelerated schedule.

What are the student responsibilities?

Student responsibilities include but are not limited to: participating in scheduled group discussions, submitting work on or before due dates, communicating with the teacher via email and the Message Center and discussing potential schedule conflicts or issues with the teacher as they arise.

What role do teachers play in a K¹² High School education?

The teacher provides educational guidance and feedback, facilitates online course discussions and evaluates and grades student work, all designed to support student success. The instructors are subject matter experts who are certified in their area of expertise.

What role do parents/caring adults play in a K¹² High School education?

Parents/caring adults are set up as mentors who engage in the student's activities and with the teacher. Parents/caring adults are not the primary teacher/subject matter experts for the high school courses. Mentors greatly influence student success by working with the student/teacher to keep students on schedule and helping flag and resolve issues with their student and teacher. Therefore, parents/caring adults are encouraged to play an active mentor role.

Are there any prerequisites for enrolling in high school (e.g., age, course work, eighth grade 'graduation')?

Course prerequisites are listed in the course descriptions. Students must have completed a minimum of 80% of a prerequisites course. We highly recommend that the student complete the first semester of a K¹² High School course before signing up for a second semester course.

We recommend that all new students take our 'Is Online Learning For Me?'
survey.

If you would like to enroll younger students in K¹² High School courses, we recommend that you first review our Questions for Parents of Young Students
to assess the appropriateness of K¹² High School courses for your students.

Can a student take a combination of K¹² middle school and high school courses?

Yes. Simply discuss your needs with the K¹² Sales Representative, and they can place your order for both K¹² middle school (Consumer Direct) and K¹² High School courses. You will be able to access all K¹² courses through your Online School (OLS) account. You will see the K¹² Consumer Direct K-8 courses and planning & progress tools in the OLS. In addition, you will see a link to the K¹² High School courses on the right-hand side.

In order for students to access K¹² High School courses, the mentor must establish a username and password for the student in the My Account section of the OLS. If the student already has an OLS username and password, this step is not necessary. Students will navigate the same path to access the K¹² High School courses.
