Math
Courses Offered
Math K:
Students will count, combine, sort, and compare sets of objects. They will learn to recognize and describe simple patterns, and recognize shapes and sizes of figures and objects. Students will also learn to recognize numbers and identify their relative values, and understand how to use them in a variety of ways.
Math 1:
Students develop a formal understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts. Students will continue the development of sorting and patterning skills; learn basic addition and corresponding subtraction facts; recognize and describe two-dimensional shapes; and build upon existing problem solving skills.
Math 2:
Students will deepen their understanding of number sense, place value, computation, estimation, measurement, and geometry.
Math 3:
Students establish fluency with simple addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication number facts. Students will learn more about the basics of geometry; study the basics of probability; and use strategies for solving word problems.
Math 4:
Fourth grade math lessons help students sharpen their computational and problem-solving skills as they applying mathematical concepts to real-world problems.
Math 5:
Students continue to develop computational skills using larger numbers up to millions. The work they will do includes learning to estimate sums and differences before finding exact solutions; developing concepts of ratio, proportion, and percent; and identifying and applying characteristics of polygons and circles. Students will also expand their understanding of probability and its link to fractions.
Pre-Algebra A:
In the first half of the K¹² Pre-Algebra sequence, students sharpen their computational and problem-solving skills while learning the language of Algebra. They will gain an understanding of the properties of real numbers, solve linear equations and inequalities, and use data analysis techniques.
Pre-Algebra B:
In the second half of the K¹² Pre-Algebra sequence, students will continue to build their Algebra skills, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative rational numbers in decimal and fraction form; studying points, lines, planes, polygons, and circles; and communicating strategies for solving word problems.
Algebra 1:
The K¹² Algebra 1 program develops algebraic fluency by providing students with the skills needed to solve equations and perform important manipulations with numbers, variables, equations, and inequalities. Students also learn concepts central to the abstraction and generalization that algebra makes possible. Students who take Algebra 1 are expected to have mastered the skills and concepts presented in the K¹² Pre-Algebra B course (or the equivalent).
