How it Works
The Chicago Virtual Charter School is a public charter school that offers a unique blend of online learning and traditional, brick-and-mortar schooling and uses curriculum and services provided by K¹². The online learning portion can happen anytime or anywhere an Internet connection can be found. The brick-and-mortar portion is held once a week at a convenient, downtown Chicago location. As a public school, the Chicago Virtual Charter School is tuition-free, making it truly the best of all worlds. For high school, CVCS uses the K¹² high school program from K¹². Whether targeting a top-tier, 4-year university, a local community college, or an immediate career, CVCS prepares students to maximize their post-high school success through K¹² high school.
Certified Teachers, Superior Teaching Tools
At the Chicago Virtual Charter School, all students interact with one or more state-certified teachers (depending on the grade level) and communicate regularly with their teachers through e-mail, telephone, and face-to-face and online meetings. Aside from the onsite portion of the program, attendance, teacher interaction, and daily lessons are all conducted online. Each CVCS family receives a loaner computer and Internet access stipend, as well as boxes of K¹² curriculum materials, including a wide array of textbooks, videos, and other hands-on tools and resources. These materials complement the interactive online elements of our program, ensuring that students receive instruction using the best method for each subject matter.
Extensive School Support System
CVCS also provides an extensive support system to both parents and students. In grades K-8, working closely with the teacher, the parent (or other responsible adult) serves as a "learning coach" to the child, helping to facilitate his or her progress and working to modify the pace and schedule as needed. At the high school level the adult is less involved, as students work at more of a collective pace with a class of students in conjunction with the teacher. Each teacher is state certified and trained in his or her specific subject area. In addition, monthly networking opportunities are provided through various events and outings, enabling the entire school community to keep in close contact.
Individualized Learning, Public School Accountability
In addition to providing individualized learning, as an online public school, CVCS provides the structure, administrative support, oversight, accountability, and state testing required of all public schools.
