World Civilizations
Course Description
In this survey course, students explore various world civilizations. Topics are organized both geographically and chronologically in lessons that examine a broad range of cultural elements—art, architecture, religion, education, and family life. In the first semester, students cover the earliest civilizations, from about 2300 B.C., to the seeds of the modern world in about A.D. 1500. In the second semester, students go from 1500 through the 1990s, covering events from the European encounter with the New World to the end of the Cold War. Students focus on globe-altering events such as the Protestant Reformation and World War I, while also exploring interconnections between regions, economies, and cultures.
