Course Overview

The Online Learning course (required for all new and returning high school students) explains to students how the program works, and provides tips on successful online learning. Students are introduced to the online tools they will use during their high school experience, including the Learning Management System that delivers course assignments. Students take part in online discussions and practice submitting computer-scored assessments and other assignments to teachers. Lifelong learning skills such as time management and study habits are also covered. By the end of the course, students will be fully prepared to begin their K12 high school courses.

Course Outline

Unit 1: The Basics

In this introductory unit, students will learn how to move smoothly and successfully from a traditional school or other online learning program into the K12 9-12 high school program. Students will also meet the people, teachers and advisors, who will guide them through their online studies and help keep them on track.

Unit 2: Preparing for Success

There are several keys to becoming a successful K12 9-12 student. Among the most important are organization, time management, and effective study skills. This unit introduces some of the skills and techniques that prepare students to learn online.

Unit 3: A Step-by-Step Approach to Online Courses

In this unit students will learn the basics of "netiquette"—that is, how to communicate courteously and effectively with teacher, support team and with their fellow students.

Unit 4: Getting to Know Your School

The K12 high school system has some great tools and features that can help students make the most of your online experience. In this unit, students will learn how to integrate them into your daily KBC routine.

In this unit, students will learn how to navigate their courses and how to use some of the tools that will help them manage their courses effectively. Students will also discover how discussion boards and other forms of online communication will enhance their K12 learning experience.
