Course Overview

For kindergartners, a key to mathematical understanding is making the link between the concrete and the abstract— between physical models and written symbols. To create the bridge to ensure these links occur, students will be counting, combining, sorting, and comparing sets of objects. They will learn to recognize and describe simple patterns and recognize shapes and sizes of figures and objects. To achieve this understanding, students will:

  • Use manipulatives to understand the relationships between numbers and physical quantities
  • Apply their understanding of counting to time and money
  • Perform simple addition and subtraction using physical objects to model problems
  • Identify and complete patterns
