National Honor Society Recognizes Students for Distinguished Service, Leadership

Agora Cyber Charter School is the first cyber school in the nation to offer a high school National Honor Society (NHS) chapter. The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. Since its inception in 1921, its mission has been to:

  • Create enthusiasm for scholarship
  • Stimulate a desire to render service
  • Promote leadership
  • Develop character in students of secondary schools

Agora is proud to be recognized by the National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (JHS) as having an outstanding high school.

The Agora NHS chapter began in 2010 and currently has forty-two members. Their combined efforts have resulted in:

  • Raising funds for Pennies for Peace, a service-learning program that educates students about how to bring education opportunities to poorer countries, "one penny at a time."
  • They have also raised money for March of Dimes, which helps moms have healthy pregnancies, through a "tee shirt drive," and by participating in a March of Dimes walk.
  • Plus, in 2012, plans for a new community service project were announced: to raise funds for Big Brothers & Big Sisters, the nation’s premier donor and volunteer-supported youth mentoring organization.

NHS also celebrated its third annual induction ceremony in 2012, which was held in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Twenty-five Agora students joined the ranks of the more than one million students who participate in NHS and NJHS each year.

New NHS members were also inducted into Agora NHS (the Chapter) at the ceremony, and new officers were named. Each school year, student officers are elected to fill the following positions: President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Parliamentarian, and Historian.

Agora NHS is working to launch a National Junior Honor Society (Middle School) chapter for the 2012–2013 school year. Please stay tuned to our website for more details!
